    CEDAR COUNTY--Mr. A.J. Holman, living a short distance southwest of Stockton died suddenly on the morning of the 20th inst. (inst. = within this month). He is reported as having been in good health and only the day previous traveled forty miles."

    =======================================

    NOTES;
    There is currently a wooden bar helping support his broken & repaired headstone (as seen in the photo on Find a Grave). On a previous visit to the Younger Cemetery, I carefully unscrewed one side of the bar and moved it to read the birth date, before carefully replacing the bar and replacing the screw. The birth date of April 16, 1816 is very clearly carved and easy to read.

    An inventory/appraisal of Andrew J. Holman's estate was listed in Cedar County Court records in July of 1870.

    Andrew J. Holman's wife/widow was named Priscilla (sometimes spelled Precilla or Percilla). Her estate inventory was taken 20 March 1886 in Cedar County by their son Christopher Columbus Holman (1848-1923), so she probably died in Feb. or March 1886.

    Save to my tree
    estate of Andrew J. Holman "incumbered" by dower for Priscilla Holman his wife

    from the courthouse in Stockton, Cedar Co., MO, deed book S, pp. 132-133

    into in parentheses is as it appears in the deed book; I added a little info in brackets for clarity and am breaking the text up into sections, to make it easier to read. In the deed book, everything is run together after "General Warranty Deed," making it hard to scan the text for details. I'm sorry I don't understand exactly what this deed says, but it seems to relinquish any claim to land in Dulina's father's [and mother's?] estate in exchange for $100?

    "General Warranty Deed

    This Indenture Made on the 30th day of August A D One thousand Eight Hundred and Seventy Six by and between Daniel Holman and Dulina Holman his wife [Dulina grew up as the daughter of Andrew J. Holman and his wife Priscilla McCarver Holman, marriage date of the parents makes me wonder if one of these parents was a step-parent?] of the County of Dade and State of Missouri parties of the First Part and Charles F White of the county of Dade in the State of Missouri party of the Second Part

    Witnesseth That the said parties of the First Part in the consideration of the sum of One Hundred ($100) dollars to them paid by the said party of the Second Part the receipt of which is hereby acknowledged do by these presents Grant Bargain and Sell Convey and Confirm unto the said party of the Second Part his heirs and assigns the following described Lots tracts or parcels of Land lying being and situated in the County of Cedar and State of Missouri

    to wit: All of their undivided right title and interest that they now have or may hereafter have in the real Estate of Andrew J Holman incumbered only by the dower now laid off for Percill? [not sure of the last 2 letters used by the writer for this name, but he means Priscilla] Holman his wife-

    Land described as follows to wit: The North half of the North West quarter of Section seventeen and the South half of the South West quarter of Section Eight and the South West quarter of the North West quarter of Section Sixteen all in Township Thirty four of Range Twenty six containing in all two hundred acres more or less

    To have and to hold the premises aforesaid with all and singular the rights privileges appurtenances and immunities thereto belonging or in anywise appertaining unto the said party of the second part and unto his heirs and assigns forever.

    The said Daniel Holman and Dulina [beginning of pg. 133] Holman hereby covenanting that they are lawfully seized of an indefensible [or indefeasible?] Estate in fee in the premises herein conveyed that they have good right convey the same that the said premises are free and clear of any encumbrances done or suffered by them or those under whom they may claim, and that will warrant and defend the title to the said premises unto the said party of the second part and unto his heirs and assigns forever against the lawful claims and demands of all persons whomsoever

    In Witness Whereof the said parties of the first part have hereunto set their hands and seals the day and year first above written

    Daniel Holman [name followed by the handwritten word "Seal" surrounded by a loopy, oval, hand-drawn seal]

    Dulina X Holman ["her" is written above the X between Dulina & Holman, "mark" is written below the X; Dulina must not have been able to write her name, and signed this deed by making her mark as an X, and her name is followed by the same handwritten word "Seal" surrounded by a loopy, oval, hand-drawn seal]

    Signed Sealed and delivered in presence of us E V Lafoon State of Missouri County of Dade [followed by a symbol that I think is intended to represent "S.S."]

    Be it remembered That on this 30th day of August A D 1876 before the undersigned a Notary Public within and for the County of Dade and State of Missouri personally came Daniel Holman and Dulina Holman his wife who are personally known to me to be the same persons whose names are subscribed to the foregoing instrument of writing as parties thereto and acknowledged the same to be theri act and deed for the puposes therein mentioned.

    And the said Dulina Holman wife of Daniel Holman being by me first made acquainted with the contents of said instrument upon an examination separate and apart from her husband acknowledged that she executed the same and relinquished her dower in the Real Estate mentioned freely and without compulsion or undue influence of her said husband.

    In testimony Whereof I have hereto set my hand and affixed my official seal at my office in Dadeville Mo. the day and year first above written. Further I was commissioned a Notary Public September 30th 1873 & qualified to act as such Oct. 10th 1873 & my term of office will expire Oct. 9th 1877 Ewel V Lafoon Notary Public

    [a hand-drawn loopy rectangle appears on the left side of the page with the initials LS within it, making a seal]

    Filed for record Sept. 1st 1876 at 8 O.clock A.M.

    Lewis Gravely [or Gavely?] Cir Clerk"

    [This document proves Andrew J. Holman was dead by 30 Aug. 1876. Priscilla was still alive on 28 Oct. 1879, when she bought land from the Youngers in Cedar Co., MO.]
