    It is assumed that the Alvin Gipson (1874-1964) whose death certificate lists his parents as Matthew Gipson and Rebecca Skimmhorn[2] is the same person as the Alvey Skimerhorn listed in the John Gipson household in the 1880 census, in spite of the fact that the 1880 census indicates that Alvey Skimerhorn is female[1].

    The identify of his parents is unknown, but he appears to have been raised by John Gipson, who was likely his guardian. See notes and speculation on the page of his brother John Skimerhorn/Gipson.

    It is not clear who Matthew Gipson (identified as Alvin's father in his death record) was. Possibly John Gipson's middle name was Matthew rather than William (the evidence for William appears to be limited to a record for a man born about 1831). Or Matthew could be another man, or the name could be an error.
