Passed away on Saturday, March 19, 2005 at the Three Rivers Health. He was born on October 17, 1914 in Whitley County, Indiana, the son of George and Louella (Stallsmith) Alexander. He attended and graduated from the Washington Center High School in Whitley, IN in 1933. He moved to Michigan in 1943. He was a very active 4-H leader and a host for many foreign exchange students. He served on the School Board at three different districts. In 1956 he built and operated the Three Rivers Livestock Sales Barn. In 1973 he became involved in Real Estate and won many trophies for his work. He also joined the Three Rivers Lions Club at the time and was an active Lion. His greatest joy was being able to help those less fortunate. He was a Gourmet Cook, and he loved to share his cooking delights with all his friends and family. He loved to go to flea markets and auctions. He loved to write poetry, some which were published in various papers and journals: he collected antique banks for his grandchildren and he was a great story teller. He was a great loving husband, father and grandfather. Al was a member of the Eagles Club, The Elks Club, the Three Rivers Masonic Lodge, #57, F&A.M. and the Three Rivers Shrine Club. In 1984 he married June (Bullard) Dechnik, who survives. Also surviving are 1 sister, Cynthia Hertsel; 2 daughters, Sara (Dale) Stuby and Susan (David) Outman; 2 sons, Arden (Dena) Alexander and Benton (Susie) Alexander; step-sons, James, Mark, and Todd Dechnik; 3 step-daughters, Joan Oxender, Irma Johnson, Lois Hassenger; and "adopted" sons, Matt, Lori and Larry Cearbaugh; and daughter-in-law, Lorraine Alexander; many nieces, nephews, grandchildren, step-grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by parents, 5 brothers, 2 sisters, and 1 son, Charles, and 2 daughters, Arlene and Delores. Memorial service and luncheon will be held on Sunday, April 3, 2005 at 2 P.M. at the Three Rivers Lions Club. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations or memorials are made to the Three Rivers Lions Scholarship Fund. Arrangements are by the Hohner Funeral Home. Published in the Kalamazoo Gazette on 3/21/2005. (Posted by a volunteer-no family connection)
