Alice May Brewin was born in 1899 at Loughborough in Leicestershire, daughter of a boiler maker and plater named Ephraim Brewin and his wife Jane. She was the seventh of eight children. The 1901 census finds Alice living with her parents and siblings at 55 Meadow Lane in Loughborough. Ten years later, they had moved a few doors down to 73 Meadow Lane.
Alice was married in Loughborough on 25th October 1919, aged 20, to a Samuel Mitchell. He claimed to be 26 on their marriage certificate, but was in fact 34. Between 1920 and 1940 Alice and Samuel had eight children together in Loughborough.
Samuel died on 7th September 1959, aged 74. They had been married for just under forty years. Alice was the informant for his death and she gave his correct age. He had obviously admitted the truth about his age to her some time after their marriage.
Alice outlived Samuel by five years, dying on 16th November 1964, aged 65. She left a will, the executors for which were her niece Kathleen Jacques (formerly Parke, daughter of her sister Rose) and Kathleen's husband, Frank Arthur Jacques.
