Alfred Freeman was born on 12th March 1838 at Wheathampstead in Hertfordshire, son of Judith Freeman, formerly Smith, and her husband William Freeman, an agricultural labourer. Alfred appears in the 1841 census living with his parents and siblings at East Lane in Wheathampstead village. Some time between 1841 and 1851, Alfred's mother died, and the 1851 census finds Alfred, one of his brothers and their widower father lodging with another family on East Lane.
The 1861 census finds Alfred living at Heston in Middlesex, working as a labourer for a brick maker.
By 1864 Alfred had returned to Wheathampstead, where he married a Sarah Warner, who was also from Wheathampstead. Sadly, she died after less than two years of marriage, aged 28. Alfred has yet to be traced after Sarah's death.
