Hogebeintum vs Blija [6 August 2012]

Kdrost,

If you search Google Maps for Hogebeintum, Ferwerderadeel (Dutch) or Hegebeintum, Ferwerderadiel (Frisian) you will find the Terp-Hogebeintum on which are located the church and the cemetery where I took this photograph.

The Vellema relative who took me to this place was reared in Hogebeintum at the base of the Terp. However most of our Vellema relatives lived nearby in Blija. Many of the Vellemas who lived (and died) in Blija were buried in the graveyard on the Terp.

The village of Blija is easily visible from Terp-Hogebeintum but is about 2 Km distant.

Three of these feature photographs of Terp-Hogebeintum which is the highest of the surviving Terpen in Friesland.--Jhamstra 10:11, 6 August 2012 (EDT)

Kdrost,

First let me say that if your ancestors go back for centuries in Blija as do mine then we are probably, at the least, distant relatives 8-).

Second let me apologize for trying to inform a resident of the district about Terpen in general or Terp-Hogebeintum in particular 8-). As you have not yet posted a personal profile I had no way to know your background or present locale.

Now regarding the specific matter of the location of this photograph (and also affecting several other grave markers that I have posted at WeRelate) -

When I had the privilege of visiting the home of my ancestors I photographed both on the Terp as well as in the village of Blija itself, having relatives buried at both sites. I have carefully reviewed the sequence of the original photographs, and while I had originally been certain these particular grave markers were photographed on the Terp, upon careful review I admit they could have been photographed in Blija itself. The architectures of the adjoining churches (visible in some of my un-cropped photos) appear sufficiently similar that I may well have confused them.

I certainly must give respectful consideration to information from a resident who could easily walk or bicycle to either site. Based upon your assurances that you have physically seen these grave markers, please accept my apologies for mis-identifying their locations.

Unfortunately in order to properly identify them I will have to delete and re-load the photos as there is no other way that I know to correct the titles of the photos themselves which are apparently wrong. I have added this task to my TO-DO list but it may be a while before I can actually do it.

However in due course I will upload the corrected Image pages. Having done that it may then be necessary to ask you (and possibly others) to un-watch the incorrect Image pages so I can delete them.

Regards,
