Family talk:Daniel Small and Ruth Barnaby (1)

Need sources [10 January 2012]

There are no sources on this page to explain why it might be presumed that Daniel's wife was Ruth Barnaby. Of the three sources I see on the various attached Person pages, one source is an unspecified rootsweb posting whose message is one of confusion, one is the URL of a no-longer-existent website that appears to give no evidence. The one link that works shows no marriage for Ruth Barnaby. On my own, I know that the 1934 edition of Desc. of Edward Small says he married "Ruth ---, perhaps Ruth Barnaby, daughter of Stephen and Ruth (Morton) Barnbay", but the text gives no explanation of the "perhaps". Any kind of reasonable search to confirm this "perhaps" would run into serious contradictions. TAG 41:22-3, says that Ruth Barnaby m. (1) 1720 William Sargeant, m. (2) Thomas Doty since Thomas Doty conveys land to his "son in law William Sargent" (one of three children by her first husband) for love and good will and ten shillings, and since in 1755 his wife Ruth surrenders her dower on another deed by Thomas Doty. The marriage to William Sargeant by Ruth "Bernabe" is found in Truro VRs in 1720. William Sergeant was the administrator of Stephen Barnaby's estate in 1727 and d. about 1728, a very strong argument that he was the one that married Stephen's daughter Ruth.

The marriage to Daniel Small is about 1720, meaning it is not backed up by a marriage record. Then, the first child is not born until 1735. That is odd. No child is named Stephen. The marriage estimate has no evidence and does not even look reasonable. Hmmm... which are we to believe?

If Ruth Barnaby married William Sargeant in 1720, she did not marry Daniel Small in 1720. But if William Sargeant d. 1728, she could have remarried before Martha's birth in 1735. The problem is that Daniel lived until 1781, so she would not have been able to marry Thomas Doty by 1755 when she participated in a deed and by 1757 when she died as his wife (which, oddly, is a death date found on Ruth's page, implying that the marriage to Thomas Doty is assumed, even though it contradicts the marriage to Daniel Small and the reports that Daniel's wife Ruth d. 1771?)

What a tangled web of mixed up facts we build when we believe unsourced web pages. It appears Ruth Barnaby was not the wife of Daniel Small. --Jrich 23:50, 8 January 2012 (EST)

Children Hannah, Isaac, Timothy, Jacob, Reuben and Jeremiah are not listed in Barnstable VRs nor does Underhill include them. While the marriages of Daniel and Martha are found in Lebanon CT VRs, there is no mention of any of these other children there either. No sources are given on any of the 5 Person pages. --Jrich 16:09, 9 January 2012 (EST)
Compare these to the children listed on Family:John Small and Hannah Barnaby (1). --Jrich 09:01, 10 January 2012 (EST)
I removed those five children and merged them into the other family. --Jrich 10:08, 10 January 2012 (EST)
