Even though 19-year-old Susan Magoffin was long called the "First Lady of the Santa Fe Trail" because she accompanied her new husband there in 1846 -- and kept a diary which was rediscovered and published in 1926 -- she was a latecomer. Fourteen years before that, Mary Dodson Donoho accompanied her husband, William, down the Santa Fe Trail to Santa Fe, where they operated a hotel on the Plaza for five years before heading back up the trail to Missouri. Their son, James, was born there and returned to Texas as an infant.
