I am a Madison County, Alabama native that was transplanted to Texas in 1970. My ancestors on my mother's side of the family, the Drake, the Vann's, and the Leftwich's, arriving in Madison County in the early 1800's. They settled in the New Hope, formerly known as Vienna, area. On my father's side of the family we have the Canterbury's, the Brockway's, and the Bobo's. The Canterbury's arrived in the early 1800's, but the Brockway's and the Bobo's did not arrive until the 1870-1880's. The Canterbury's made their home in what is now known as the Madison area. The Brockway's and the Bobo's received land grants from their time served in the Civil War, and settled in the Northwest corner around the Elkwood area. The little community known as Bobo was named from my Great-Grandfather, Arvi Joseph Bobo. My parents met in the middle in Huntsville. Both worked for Redstone Arsenal, formerly known as "Huntsville Arsenal (a chemical munitions plant)". My father worked in maintenance and my mother worked on one of the ammunition lines. After they married and left the Arsenal, they opened a small grocery store on what is now Governors Drive across the street from the Martin Stove Plant. In 1958 we moved near New Hope in the Oak Grove community. My brother, Ernest, and I both attended New Hope schools.

My interest in genealogy stems from my father's desire to find out about his past. I remember as a young child going to Downtown Huntsville on Saturdays. While my mother would shop the Five and Dime stores, my brother and I would be with my father in the dusty basement of the old Madison County Courthouse looking up records of his family. When my father passed away in 1962 I did not have any interest in my family history. It wasn't until after I had already moved to Texas, and being so far removed from the family records in that dusty basement, that I decided to fulfill what my father had started.
