According to the paper's "About us" page, "what is now The Republic began as a weekly, The Republican, in 1872...." According to Newspapers.com and the Library of Congress (LoC), there was a paper entitled The Columbus Republican which was published weekly from 1872 which is likely what the "About us" page is referring to; Newspapers.com has holdings under this title through 1927, but the LoC record indicates it ceased publication in 1918.

According to the LoC, The Daily Evening Republican ran from 1877 to 1883 and was succeeded by The Evening Republican, which ran until 1966 and was the direct antecdent of The Republican. It also appears that The Columbus Ledger which ran from 1916 to 1924 was absorbed by The Evening Republican.

According to the "About us" page, the paper was sold by the Brown family in November 2015 to AIM Media Indiana LLC, an affiliate of AIM Media Texas LLC, which itself is owned by AIM Media Management.

Therefore, the titles which should be linked to this source include:

  • The Republican 1967–
  • The Evening Republican 1883–1966
  • The Daily Evening Republican 1877–1883
  • The Columbus Republican 1872–1918

The Columbus Ledger should be linked to a different source page.
