Woolley is a village and civil parish which was part of Barnsley Rural District from 1894 until the rural district was abolished in 1938. From 1938 until 1974 it was located in Wakefield Rural District and from 1974 it has been a part of the City of Wakefield in West Yorkshire, England. The population at the 2001 census was 575, while in the 1820s it had a population of 482 (source: GENUKI). Historically it was in the ecclesiastical parish of Royston in the Staincliffe Wapentake.
