Newport was the largest town in the historic county of Monmouthshire until 1974 and became a unitary authority in 1996. During the interim period it was a district municipality in the county of Gwent which replaced Monmouthshire in 1974. Newport, Gwent, included the County Borough of Newport as constituted in Monmouthshire before 1974 along with some neighbouring parishes from Magor and St. Mellons Rural District. |
