Hornby (near Catterick) (#18 on map) is now a civil parish and a village located about 4 miles (6.4 km) northwest of Bedale. Since 1974 it has been part of the non-metropolitan Richmondshire District in the shire county of North Yorkshire, England. The name of the village derives from Old Norse meaning "the farm belonging to Horni".

Prior to the nationwide municipal reorganization of 1974, Hornby was located in Leyburn Rural District. Historically, it was an ecclesiastical parish in the Hang West Wapentake.

Hornby is probably the most northern civil parish within what was Leyburn Rural District. Other places now in the parish, but formerly separate civil parishes, include: Arrathorne (#2), Patrick Brompton (#25) and Newton le Willows (#24). The parishes of Tunstall and Scotton in the neighbouring Bedale Rural District are also nearby. .
