NOTE: There are a number of places in Yorkshire named Marton, usually with an additional name as part of the official description. The village described here is simply known as "Marton", although the name of the civil parish is Marton cum Grafton.

Marton cum Grafton was in the West Riding until 1974 and is now in North Yorkshire. Marton cum Moxby has always been in the North Riding of Yorkshire, as has Marton (near Pickering), and Marton in Cleveland was in the far northeast of the North Riding of Yorkshire and is now a part of Middlesbrough. There are others.

The only Grafton found in any riding of Yorkshire is this one.

the following text is based on an article in Wikipedia

Marton is now a village in the Harrogate district of North Yorkshire, England. It is situated approximately 15 miles (24 km) northwest of the city of York and 6 miles (9.7 km) northeast of the market town of Knaresborough. Together with the village of Grafton to the north it forms the civil parish of Marton cum Grafton.

In 2007 a Roman lead coffin burial was discovered very close to the village, which was widely reported in the local and national press: the village history group intend to use the location of this burial as the starting point for an extended search for the Roman villa which they believe is certainly associated with it. (See Marton cum Grafton Village History Website below.)

Historically, Marton was an ancient and ecclesiastical parish in the Upper division of the Claro Wapentake. Grafton was another settlement within the parish. From 1894 until 1938, Marton cum Grafton was located in Great Ouseburn Rural District and from 1938 until 1974 in Nidderdale Rural District. It was enlarged in 1960 by the abolition of the parish of Upper Dunsforth cum Branton Green. In 1974 the area became part of the Harrogate District of North Yorkshire.

The page, Great Ouseburn Rural District, has an outline map of all the civil parishes in the district.

  • A Vision of Britain through Time also provides links to maps of the West Riding, produced by the United Kingdom Ordnance Survey, illustrating the boundaries between the civil parishes and the rural districts at various dates. Those listed here provide data for the part of the West Riding that transferred to North Yorkshire in 1974 plus the northern parts of Leeds and Bradford. These maps all blow up to a scale that will illustrate small villages and large farms or estates.

[Note: this map appears to be no longer available on the Vision of Britain website. This is unfortunate because the equivalent map from 1931-44 was redrawn after the 1938 reorganization of the rural districts in the northern part of the West Riding.]
  • Ordnance Survey Northern part of the West Riding 1944. The urban and rural districts of the northern part of the West Riding (mostly Settle, Skipton, Ripon and Pateley Bridge, and Nidderdale, with sections of Wharfedale and Wetherby) after the revisions of 1938.
