Crocketford lies at a road junction 8 miles (13 km) northeast of Castle Douglas. It is also known as Ninemile Bar, a name that dates from the establishment of a road toll bar here in the 18th century, indicating its distance as 9 miles (11 km) from Dumfries.

Crocketford was located in the parish of Urr in the former County of Kirkcudbrightshire in southwest Scotland. This area is now part of the unitary authority called the Dumfries & Galloway Council Area.
