Stainforth is a small town and civil parish in the Metropolitan Borough of Doncaster, in South Yorkshire, England. It is around 7 miles (11 km) northeast of the centre of Doncaster, close to Hatfield and Thorne. It has a population of 6,342, reducing slightly to 6,282 at the 2011 Census.

From 1894 until the municipal reorganization of 1974, Stainforth was located in Thorne Rural District. It was also in the ecclesiastical parish of Hatfield in the wapentake of Strafforth and Tickhill.

Stainforth was a mining village, with the Hatfield Main Colliery at its centre. The colliery was open for around 80 years, from when it entered full production in 1921 up to it closing in August 2001.

Bramwith Sand

GENUKI quotes from a gazetteer of the 1820s:

"BRAMWITH SAND, (or South Bramwith) in the parishes of Barnby Dun and Hatfield, and wapentake of Strafforth and Tickhill; 5 miles SW. of Thorne."

The settlement is not found independently amongst entries in Wikipedia or A Vision of Britain through Time, but is mentioned in the gazetteer reference for Stainforth (near Doncaster).

In the 1891 census, an area is referred to as Stainforth with Bramwith. From this and a list of boundary changes of 1884 in A History of Britain through Time would appear that Bramwith was absorbed into Stainforth at this time.
