Barden (near Leyburn) (#3 on map) is now a civil parish and a village in the Richmondshire District of North Yorkshire, England. It is about 5 miles (8 km) south of the town of Richmond. According to the 2001 UK census the parish had a population of 49, and remained at less than 100 inhabitants in the 2011 UK census. In accordance with the Office of National Statistics procedures, population information for parishes of less than 100 people, is reported in with the population of a neighbouring parish, in this case, the parish of Hauxwell.

Prior to the nationwide municipal reorganization of 1974, Barden was located in Leyburn Rural District. Historically, it was located in the ecclesiastical parish of East Hauxwell (now Hauxwell) in the Hang West Wapentake.

The following description from John Marius Wilson's Imperial Gazetteer of England and Wales of 1870-72 is provided by the website A Vision of Britain Through Time (University of Portsmouth Department of Geography).

"BARDEN, a township in Hawkswell parish, [North Riding of] Yorkshire; 3½ miles NE of Leyburn. It includes the hamlet of Barden-Dykes. Acres: 1,330. Real property: £1,292. Population: 76. Houses: 17."

The area of the parish of Hauxwell was 3,850 acres, and divided into its townships East Hauxwell: 1,250 acres, West Hauxwell: 900 acres, Barden: 1,780 acres and Garriston: 670 acres.
