Until 1844 Axminster and four or five surrounding parishes were considered to be in Dorset. In 1844 the Dorset part of the parish of Axminster became part of Devon, and from then on Axminster was wholly in Devon. Axminster parish was abolished 1.4.1915 to become the separate parishes of Axminster Town and Axminster Hamlets. Chardstock and Hawkchurch remained in Dorset until 1896. Thorncombe started in Devon and was transferred to Dorset in 1844. Lyme Regis was always in Dorset.

The registration district was abolished 1.7.1936 to become part of Honiton Registration District and Bridport Registration District.
