Person talk:Sarah Crain (29)

Crain relationship [11 February 2014]

The fact that Sarah's maiden name was Crain/Crane has been in Question.

Some researchers, early on, found a reconstructed Hamilton County Marriage lists which listed her as Sarah Brown. There is more evidence to suggest that her maiden name was Crain/Crane.

Mary Gambrel Low's death Certificate in Allen County Kansas states that her mother was Sarah Crane.

James Gambrel marriage license in Nebraska states that his mother was Sarah Crain.

Daughter Elizabeth Gambrel is buried in the Hofner Cemetery in Mt Pleasant/Healthy Ohio, in a plot adjacent to Ebenezer Crain. Since Sarah's 2nd son is named Ebenezer, there is a good possibility that this is a close relative (father or brother). The 1850 census supplement indicates that Ebenezer Crane was a saddle maker.

Alexader Gambrel (Hugh's nephew), son of Edward, married Amanda Crain in 1825. That brings up the question of whether Amanda and Sarah were related. If they were, they were not sisters. Amanda Crain had a sister named Sarah, but she married a man by the name of Vorhis Hilliar/Hillyar. She is listed in the 1850 census for Montgomery County Indiana, and is a neighbor of Edward (at least based on the household number shown in the census report).

Some researchers, over at Ancestory.com, have shown Sarah Crane as a daughter of Cyrus Crane, who died in Montgomery County in 1848(?). Cyrus Crane had a son named Jehiel Ross Crane. A number of years ago, In a query on that web-site, I posed a question about the possibility of an extended family relationship between the Cranes and Ross', especially in light of the fact that Sarah's grandson, James Madison Gambrel, married the daughter of Jehiel Ross (Eldora Caroline Ross) in the 1880s. It makes me wonder if some one assumed that the Ross/Crane connection was in fact true, and it was with Sarah and Jehiel. I have not found any sources other than Ancestroy's Family Trees indicating who Sarah's father was.

I believe the relationship between Sarah and Ebenezer is the clue to solving this mystery.--PhilGambrel 13:55, 11 February 2014 (UTC)

The 1850 Census lists Ebenezer Crain age 40 a Saddler born in Ohio. The Hofner Cemetery Records indicate his tombstone says "died 27 April 1850 or 1858/50 y". With this information it would appear that the later date is a better guess. But that would make his age 48y not 50y. So which is correct? One could infer from this, that Sarah and Ebenezer are of the same generation, and if related, either siblings or cousins.

I recently uncovered a transcript of a Bible record stating that Ebenezer Crain was Born August 9 1808, That would make the 50 years and the 1858 date more accurate.

More information from a Crain - Gambrel family Bible has come to light. It is not known who owned the Bible, but it might be deduced that it was 1. Ebenezer Crain; 2. His wife Mary; 3. One of his children; 4. a grandchild; or 5. another very close family member.

It states that Hugh Gambrel and Sarah Crain was married May the 9th 1826. So much for the Sarah Brown reconstructed Marriage record.

Births: Stephen Crain born March 1st 1801 Sarahann Crain born January 1st 1807 Ebenezer Crain born August 9th 1808 William Crain Born Jun 6th 1813 Hugh Gambrel born June the 5th 1795 Ebenezer Gambrel born October 20th 1832 John Gambrel born May 28th 1834 Amos Clevenger Gambrel born July the 1st 1837 Mary Gambrel born Oct 2 1839 Hannah Gambrel born August 12 1841

From this list I deduce that the Crains are siblings, and the Gambrels (with the exception of Hugh) are children of Hugh & Sarah.

One more entry in this Bible may be a huge lead. Ezekiel Crain departed this life April 4th 1826 age 60 years {b. 1766}

To me, it is evident that this is Sarah's father.

There are more entries of Crain children, but I will not deal with them here and now.
