Person talk:Elijah McClanahan (2)

Confusion on Elijah [27 August 2017]

The information here differs quite a bit from my conclusions. Olde Elijah married only once to Ann EWING. His son Elijah (say 1729-bef 1796) married 1st Letitia BRECKENRIDGE (no children) and 2nd Margaret TRIMBLE. His son Elijah Jr (say 1769-?) married first Nancy MOFFETT and 2nd Margaret GILKERSON. But I agree that the number of generations and Elijahs is unclear. How should I proceed?--KayS 05:16, 15 June 2014 (UTC)

Kay, let's try to solve this.... [Obviously many researchers have messed this family up]

Elijah McClanahan (you say this is "Jr.") is listed as obtaining a Marriage License in Sept. 1749 to marry Lettice Breckenridge, as follows:

Vol. 2 - MARRIAGES LICENSES IN AUGUSTA COUNTY. 1749-- September __, Elijah McClenachan and Lettice Breckinridge.

Interesting that it does not call Elijah "Elijah Jr." since his father was obviously still alive, but let's leave that alone for the moment.

Do you have an estimate for when Elijah Jr. married Margaret Trimble? I come up empty on any records to establish this marriage....

Some have Ann Ewing's date of death listed as March 1764 (no sources listed)....

I also can't find a marriage record for Elijah McClanahan III and Margaret Gilkerson. Do you have any records for that marriage?

Feel free to leave a message either here or on my Talk Page, maybe we can straighten out this family for others...

Best regards,

Jim:)

Hi Jim,

Yes, let's work on this. First, the nomenclature I'm using is 'Olde' Elijah (c1710-aft Nov 1789) m. Ann Ewing. His son is Elijah 'Sr' (say 1729-inv. 29 Jun 1796) m. Lettice Breckenridge and Margaret Trimble. And his son is Elijah 'Jr' (say 1769-aft 1840) m. Nancy Moffett and Margaret Gilkeson. Or do you prefer I, II, III?

Anyway it was the 2nd Elijah who m. Lettice Breckenridge in Sep 1749, but there is no record of her death and whether she had children is questionable. According to Roger Breckenridge (quote): "In the absence of affirmative evidence, the author does not assume that Letitia Breckenridge, daughter of Alexander and Jane (Preston) Breckenridge, left descendants." [Source: Peggy Breckenridge, "My Family Tree," RootsWeb WorldConnect, 22 Jul 2003, (online: http://wc.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?db=pegvbreck&I11.x=15&I11.y=3)]

I have no source for the marriage date of Elijah SR and Margaret Trimble, but his will dated 22 Feb 1793 mentioned wife Margaret and 2 youngest daughters--presumably Elizabeth and Lettice Ann. Also John Trimble's will dated 29 Oct 1789 mentioned daughter Margaret McClenachan.

Ann Ewing's was supposedly killed in an Indian attack on March 1764 according to Joe McClenahan ["Some Progenitors (McClanahan, McClenahan)," AOL.Hometown, Apr 2001, (online: http://hometown.aol.com/joemac1938/progen.htm)].

Lyman Chalkley, Chronicles of the Scotch-Irish Settlement in Virginia, (Baltimore, MD: Genealogical Publishing Co, 1965), v2, p 358 (giving 21 Aug 1799 "Elijah McClenachan, widower, and Margaret Gilkerson, daughter of above Wm. Gilkerson").

If you are interested, I can send a PDF file with about 20 pages of information I've collected about this McClenachan (as originally spelled) family. Please send your email address to me (kay at thegasgun dot com).

Look forward to hearing from you ... --KayS 20:42, 27 August 2017 (UTC)
