Person talk:Beriah Higgins (2)

Wrong Family [1 November 2008]

Beriah cannot be from Family:Elisha Higgins and Jane Collins (1). His birth is listed as 1692. Elisha and Jane did not get married until 1701 and their son Beriah was born in 1705/6. This according to Eastham vital records. See Source:Mayflower Descendant, p. 7:18.

Could this be the right Beriah and it is just the birth date (1692) that is wrong? Well this Beriah's daughter Thankful is born in 1717. The son of Elisha and Jane would only have been 12 and so could not be the father. Desire Cook, the daughter of Josiah Cook who is listed as the wife of Beriah, was born 1694 (Source:Mayflower Descendant, p. 7:238) and it is unlikely she would marry the Beriah born in 1705, 11 years younger than herself.

So it appears these are two separate Beriahs, and the one this page describes is not the one born into the family of Elisha and Jane Collins.

Source:The New England Historical and Genealogical Register, p. 151:7, in the article Joseph Collins of Eastham, says the Beriah who was born in 1705 married (1) Jemima Wetherell, and m. (2) Abigail Higgins, not Desire Cook.

Source:Richard Higgins, a resident and pioneer settler at Plymouth and Eastham, Massachusetts and at Piscataway, New Jersey, and his descendants, p. 99, says a deed shows this Beriah Higgins (the one born in 1692) to be a son of Joseph and Ruth Higgins.
