Died young from complications of rheumatoid arthritis. She had an operation to straighten her legs, in hopes she would be able to walk again. Possibly died from infection post-surgery.

The Physical Culture Hotel, where Winnie and her mother were in 1930, has its own interesting history. See this profile of the hotel/sanatorium. This brochure from 1926 illustrates the benefits touted for the Physical Culture Hotel when Winnie travelled there. Even more interesting, the building is apparently still abandoned today (tho it is in private ownership and trespassers are not permitted). There is a Facebook page for the building with a great series of images.
