One of the first in his family to complete high school. Worked for Sears in the 1930's, selling furnaces. Worked for the State of Pennsylvania in Harrisburg in the late 1930's, driving back to McKeesport on the weekends on the yet unopened stretches of the Pennsylvania Turnpike.

Served in the Pacific during World War II with an anti-aircraft artillery unit made up mostly New Hampshire National Guardsmen. On the ship going over to Australia, he won so many cigarettes at poker that he had a corner on the tobacco market on board. His unit served in New Guinea during part of the war and he was at one time separated from his unit, spending the night in the jungle after a Japanese attack. Contracted malaria during the war but recovered.

Established and ran restaurants after the war in Monterey, CA (the Pom Pom and the El Patio). Left Monterey in the early 70's to live in Las Vegas, NV for a number of years before moving to Columbus, OH near his daughter Natalie's family in the mid-1970's.
