Death
There is no contemporary record documenting the death of William Thomas Stephenson known to exist. Family group sheets prepared by Bonnie (Stephenson) Lamb (now deceased) in 1995 place his date of death on 15 Jun 1898 in Magazine, Logan, Arkansas, with his burial on the following day at Magazine. Given the lack of vital records for Logan County in 1898, (reporting of deaths did not start until 1914) the original source of this information may have been from a family bible, or perhaps relayed to her by her father and William's son, Thomas Jefferson Stephenson, who was fourteen years old at the recorded time of his death. As of this writing, the orignal source remains unknown.
William's wife Susan is found in the 1900 census living in Wilburton, Choctaw Nation, Indian Territory with her sons Eli and Thomas and daughters Mattie and Susie Stephenson. Susan's marital status in the 1900 census is widowed, so we can assume that William died at least sometime prior to 16 June 1900.[12]
Suggestions for Further Research
- The area of Magazine and Booneville in Logan County, Arkansas was active with railraod construction for the Choctaw & Memphis Railroad in June and July of 1899. There may be a connection with William, as he and his brother appear to have been railroad workers in the 1880 census. Could William perhaps have died in the summer of 1899, instead of 1898 in Magazine?
