Smith, William - born 7/22/1763 in Staunton, Auigusta County, Virginia; entered service 1777 in Amherst County (area later Nelson County), Virginia, in Virginia regiment; moved in 1825 to Augusta County, Virginia where applied for pension 1832 per witneeese William Kinney & Charley Kinney & County court clark Jefferson Kinney; Thomas Joplin made affidavit then Nelson County, Virginia, he had served 2 tours from Amherst County, Virginia, with soldier in Revolutionary War per County Justice of the Peace Robert J. Kincaid; soldier received Pension 1835 in Augusta County, Virginia per County Justice of the Peace James Alexander; soldier died 1/26/1842 in Rockbridge County, Virginia; married 1/22/1794 to Hannah/Hanny Snead (Marriage Bond 1/6/1794, signed by Randolph Snead, witness W.S. Crawford), Amherst County, Virginia, per certification 1845 by County Clerk of court Samuel Garland; widow received Pension age 74 in Rockbridge County, Virginia in 1845 per County Justice of the Peace William M. Gold & County court clerk Samuel McD Reid; widow's brother Randall Snead of Nelson County, Virginia, made affidavit then Rockbridge County, Virginia that he was 4-5 years older then sister & he was at her wedding which was performed by Reverend Samuel Day also Randall & sister were children of John Snead of Amherst County, Virginia; widow granted Bounty Land Warrant #27686 there in 1855 at age 77, per witnesses Preston Trotter & Daniel Shickel & County court clerk Charles Chapin; her eldest son Robert was born 10/15/1794 & resided 1844 in Rockbridge County, Virginia; widow's daughter mentioned but not named; widow's brother Randall made affidavit 1849 in Nelson County, Virginia, per County Justice of the Peace Edmund F. Coffey & County court clerk Spotswood Garland; query letter in file 1909 from great great grandaughter Lida Smith Clark of Springfield, Missouri, says she was great granddaughter of soldier's son Jeremiah & wife Isabella (daughter of Virginia Revolutionary War Soldier John Green) . F-W2629, R2237.
- Note: Jeremiah Smith was born in 1773 and married Isabella Green on 29 April 1800 in Greene County, Tennessee, so he could not have been this William Smith's son.
