William Keyte was baptised on 26th March 1797 at Chatham in Kent, son of a William and Sarah Keyte. His parents appear to have had two other sons baptised there too: Richard in 1796 and John in 1798.

William’s father was a sergeant in the Royal Artillery, and was originally from Shipston-on-Stour in Worcestershire. William’s father retired from the army in 1809 and it seems likely that the family then returned to the Shipston area. William’s older brother, Richard, married at Shipston in 1818. It has yet to be established when William’s mother died.

On 2nd November 1820, aged 23, William married Sarah Miles at Broadway in Worcestershire, about eleven miles west of Shipston. She was 24 and from Broadway.

William and Sarah had six children in Broadway between 1822 and 1838. The 1841 census finds the family living on High Street in Broadway. William worked as a painter and glazier, whilst Sarah was a dressmaker.

William’s father died in 1845 at Epsom in Surrey.

Sometime between 1841 and 1851, William and Sarah moved to the nearby market town of Evesham. Both the 1851 and 1861 censuses find Sarah and William living on Port Street in the Bengeworth area of Evesham. In 1861 they had their daughter Elizabeth, whose husband had recently died, living with them with her daughter. By 1871, the family had moved back to Broadway. In the later censuses, no occupation was given for Sarah, whilst William continued to work as a painter and glazier. By 1881, William described himself as ‘formerly painter and glazier’.

Sarah died at Broadway on 19th September 1881, aged 85. Her cause of death was given as paralysis and debility. William outlived her by just over three years and died at Broadway on 17th September 1884, aged 87.

This baptism has been identified on the basis that it is in the right place and time to match the age and place of birth William gave in the censuses, and one of the witnesses to William's marriage in 1820 was a Richard Keyte - and the William baptised in 1797 had an older brother named Richard who also appears to have moved to the west of the country, appearing in Warwickshire in the 1861 census.
