Virginia B. Apple, 98, of Hamilton, N.J., passed away peacefully on Tuesday, December 20, 2016, in the comfort of her home.
Mrs. Apple was born in Parkersburg, W.Va., to the late Fred S. Batten and Dasie Elizabeth Batten on May 8, 1918.
She graduated from Parkersburg High School. She went on to earn her teaching degree from Marshall College, graduating in 1939. She began her career as a teacher and shortly thereafter met and married the love of her life, soon-to-be Dr. Stanley B. Apple of Trenton, N.J. They were married for 72 years.
Virginia worked on the assembly line in Trenton making planes for the war effort at the General Motors plant while her husband served in WWII as a medical officer. After the war they moved from Trenton to Princeton, N.J. to raise their family of two sons and two daughters. Virginia was a loving wife, mother of four, grandmother to eight, and great-grandmother to seventeen. Her family was the joy of her life. It was through her experiences as a Girl Scout and Troop Leader that she developed her commitment to volunteer work throughout her life. Her children’s schools, her church, and numerous charities benefited from her dedication to helping others.
Virginia and Stanley enjoyed 25 years of retirement in sunny Sarasota, Fla. making new friends, enjoying the cultural activities well known to Sarasota, and especially playing in the Gulf of Mexico and walking the beach as they searched for seashell treasures. Sara Bay Country Club was an integral part of their social life, providing a variety of activities and friendships that enriched their later years.
Throughout her life Virginia was known for her radiant smile and effervescent personality.
Predeceased by her parents, Fred and Dasie Batten; her brothers, Dr. James C. Batten and Frederic S. Batten; her husband, Dr. Stanley B. Apple; and her son, Kevin W. Apple.
Virginia is survived by her daughters, Carolyn Apple Kozlowski and her husband, Dave, of Sarasota, Fla. and Betsy Apple Gilbert and her husband, Carl, of Hamilton; her son, S. Benson Apple Jr. and Darlene Busacca of Hamilton.
