PORTLAND -- Thomas P. Wardwell, 75, of Portland, died on Dec. 7, 2006, at the Maine Veterans' Home in Scarborough, after a long illnes

    He was born in Islesboro, son of Raymond and Katherine Pendleton Wardwell. He graduated from Islesboro High School, Northeastern University, and the Bentley School of Accounting and Finance.
    Mr. Wardwell served in the U.S. Army and the Army Reserves from 1953 to 1960. From 1956 until his retirement, he worked as an accountant for the Army and in firms located in Boston, New York and North Carolina.
    In 1985, he married Barbara Newcomb Wardwell.
    Mr. Wardwell was an avid reader, especially of the classics and historical non-fiction. In addition, he loved to sing music of the 1930s to 1950s, a pastime he shared with his dear wife. He served as President of the Tenant's Council at Harbor Terrace, and as a member of the Resident's Advisory Board at 75 State St. 
    He was predeceased by his wife in 1999 and his brother J. Edward in 1998.
    Mr. Wardwell is survived by his stepdaughters, Grace Cleaves of Portland and Virginia Ward of Alfred; stepson George Lackee of Norway; sister-in-law Barbara B. Wardwell of Jay; nephews Gary Wardwell of Gorham and David Wardwell of Bedford, N.H.; several grandchildren; three great- grandchildren; two grandnieces; and a warm community of cousins, relatives and friends in Islesboro. Especially attentive during his last years were cousins Andy and Barbara Pendleton.
    A memorial service will be held at the Independent Death Care Memorial Chapel at 471 Deering St., Portland, on Sunday, Dec. 17, at 2 p.m. A private burial will take place in the spring in Islesboro.
    In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Mr. Wardwell's name to the loving and caring home of his last years:
