He gave a great bell to Cardington Church on which his name is inscribed " Michaell Stevens, Thomas Corfeild, churchwardens 1626. JP 1628 for the Liberty of Wenlock where he was bailiff. Thomas Corfield saw the building of Plaish Hall and began rebuilding Chatwall soon afterwards which had two stories and an attic. It was dressed in Hoar Edge grit sandstone, with Thomas erecting the family arms dated 1613 over the door. He also built a timber framed east wing which extended further to the south than it does today. In 1589 Thomas witnessed a land deed, and ten years later he is mentioned in Exchequer deponents. On 20th November 1599 he witnessed a deed between John Mynton and Edward Lutwyche. In the same year he was burgess of Much Wenlock. In 1608 Thomas and his brother William witnessed the sale of land from John Harley of Ruckley to Humphrey Lee. A deed, dated 1609, between Richard Blunden, Frances Leighton and Humphrey Lee of Langley (-1632), relating to land in Coates and Rushbury, was also witnessed by Thomas. Thomas leased land in Longville from another landowner, William Lutwyche, for 80 years (1609-1689) 'if so long he do live'. In 1615 Thomas gained rights over Lea Hill farm. The Wenlock Corporation Records for 1616-1617 list Thomas' account for the year. In 1653 Thomas bought the grain tythes of Holt Preen from Rowland Hunt. |
