Research Notes

There are no contemporary records documenting the birth or death of Susan Malissa Peay that are known to exist at this time. It is the speculation of the author of this profile that the dates presented above were likely found in a family bible, whose origins are lost to history. Family group sheets prepared by Bonnie (Stephenson) Lamb (now deceased) in 1995 are this pages source for the dates. Bonnie was a granddaughter of Susan Malissa Peay and her husband William Thomas Stephenson. However, census records available for Susan do confirm her age at a given date. Most of these records are consistent in placing her birth at about 1847-48. The exception to this is the 1880 census which places her birth at about 1850.

Birth

Susan was recorded in six censuses still available over the course of her life. Two were in 1880, about a day apart. In addition to this, there is record of a marriage bond, where her age is stated.

  • 1880 U.S. Federal Census Population Schedule, 14 Jun 1880 (Eastland Co, TX): as "Susan M Stephenson," aged 30 years old, born about 1850. [6]
  • 1880 U.S. Federal Census Population Schedule, 15/16 Jun 1880 (Stephens Co, TX): as "Susan M Stephenson," aged 30 years old, born about 1850. [7]
  • 1900 U.S. Federal Census Population Schedule, 16 Jun 1900: as "SM Stevens," aged 52 years old, born about 1848. [8]

There is a conflict in the 1900 census with regards to Susan's date of birth. It is stated that she was born in April of 1848, whereas the month from the family group sheet presented has a birth month of December.
