Facts and Events
Sterling Dugger was born ca 1804/1805 in Brunswick Co, VA. He is a proven child of Henry and Armon Dugger. Sterling Dugger was apparently with his widowed mother Armon on the 1810 Brunswick Co, VA census. Sterling Dugger was named in the August 1816 Court record dividing his father Henry Dugger's estate. (Brunswick Co, VA Order Book 27 page 142). Sterling Dugger was named in the May 1817 Court record dividing his father Henry Dugger's estate. (Brunswick Co, VA Order Book 27 page 304). Sterling Dugger did not appear on the 1820 census. He was probably living wherever his mother was that year (haven't found her yet). He might have been with his older brother Joseph Dugger in Williamson Co, TN as he had two males age 16-25 (c1794/1804) living with him then, too old to be his own children. If Sterling left Brunswick Co, VA, he returned, for he was found there on several records starting in the late 1820's. On 27 Nov 1828 Sterling Dugger obtained a marriage bond in Brunswick Co, VA to marry Frances Parish. Isaac House was bondsman. The marriage was performed (same day?) by Littleberry Orgain. Sterling Dugger was listed on the 1830 census in Brunswick Co, VA. Analysis:
Beginning in 1833, Sterling Dugger was listed on the Brunswick Co, VA Real Property Tax list with 50 acres. I don't know where he got this land unless it was inherited from his father or from his wife's family. Sterling Dugger was listed on the 1834 Real Property Tax list in Brunswick Co, VA with 50 acres on Rocky Run. Sterling Dugger was listed on the 1835 Real Property Tax list in Brunswick Co, VA with 50 acres on Rocky Run. Beginning in 1836 Sterling Dugger and John Dugger were listed together on the Brunswick Co, VA Real Property Tax list with 37 acres on Couch's Run. I'm not sure if this is a portion of the 50 acres Sterling had before (John wasn't listed before) that was reduced 23 acres (no record of him selling land in this timeframe) or if this was a different parcel of land. Sterling Dugger and his brother John Dugger were on the 1838 Brunswick Co, VA Real Property Tax list with 37 acres on Couch's Run. Sterling Dugger and his brother John Dugger were on the 1839 Brunswick Co, VA Real Property Tax list with 37 acres on Couch's Run. Sterling Dugger and his brother John Dugger were on the 1840 Brunswick Co, VA Real Property Tax list with 37 acres on Couch's Run. Sterling Dugger was listed on the 1840 census in Brunswick Co, VA. Analysis:
Sterling Dugger and his brother John Dugger were on the 1841 Brunswick Co, VA Real Property Tax list with 37 acres on Couch's Run. Sterling Dugger was on the 1842 Brunswick Co, VA Real Property Tax list with 37 acres on Couch's Run. His brother John was not listed this time. That may indicate that John sold his share of the property back to Sterling, but I found no deed showing this. Sterling Dugger was on the 1843 Brunswick Co, VA Real Property Tax list with 37 acres on Couch's Run. On 10 Feb 1843 Sterling Dugger and wife Frances sold 37 acres on Couch's Run to Vicey Parish. I'm not sure how they acquired this land. This seems to be the same land Sterling and his brother John Dugger were taxed for beginning in 1836, so that probably means it came via their father Henry Dugger's estate. I'm not sure why John wasn't named as a party on this deed. (Brunswick Co, VA Deed Book 33 page 147). Sterling Dugger was on the 1844 Brunswick Co, VA Real Property Tax list with 37 acres on Couch's Run. He had sold this land in 1843, but apparently still taxed for it (tax list was for the previous years property I suppose). In 1844, Sterling Dugger was named (among others) in a deed giving Power of Attorney to Douglas H. Wray for dividing property of his Uncle James Dugger, deceased, of Tippah Co, MS. (Brunswick Co, VA Deed Book 33 page 479). In 1845 Sterling Dugger was again named again in relationship to the estate of his Uncle James Dugger, and of his Aunt Sarah Dugger Shell, deceased. (Brunswick Co, VA Deed Book 34 page 51). On 9 Sep 1848 Sterling Dugger was bondsman for the marriage of his daughter Rebecca L. Dugger to Charles A. Sadler in Brunswick Co, VA. Sterling Dugger died in April 1850 in Brunswick Co., VA of pleurisy. He is listed on the 1850 census mortality schedule. References
