- Bedford Co., VA Deeds: Stith to Crawford. 27th Day of March 1770 between Richard Stith for Behalf of the Exrs. of Richard Randolph Gent. of Henrico County Deceased of the one part and James Crawford and Samuel Crawford sons of Wlliam Crawford Dec'd. of the other part. Witnesseth the said Richard Stith for and in consideration of the full sum of __ pounds seven shilling and six pence current money of Virginia in hand paid the receipt whereof he doth hereby acknowledge hath granted bargained and sold and by these presents doth grant bargain and deliver and conform unto them the said James Crawford and Samuel Crawford their heirs and assigns forever one certain tract or part of land containing two hundred and twelve acres by the same or less on both sides of Hays fork of Goose Creek at the head of situate in Bedford County and Bonded.... being part of a patent granted four thousand acres being part of the land conveyed by ___ of Richard Randolph Gent. ecords show that Samuel Crawford Sr. Acquired 1000 acres at Tar Fork in 1795. According to an old map it looks like his plantation was called Crawfordsville. Saml and Jane Mason Crawford married 1771 in Virginia; Saml married secondly in KY (Mary) Elizabeth Blacklock (1775-1839), daughter of Mrs (Townsend?) Blacklock (1752-1825), and Richard Blacklock (1750-1813). ~~~ The Samuel and Janette Mason Crawford log home probably sat down by the first or second creek next to the main entry lane. Janet's brother's log cabin, Joseph mason, was facing onto 992 about half mile towards the family's congregation, same side as: Piscah Church. The man who used to till the cornfield near the Crawford cemetery told me that sometimes when he went over a certain sunken area in that cornfield debris would come up like it had been a homestead dump. Samuel Crawford Sr. now has a federal issued granite revolutionary war, and a war of 1812 veteran headstone here in the Crawford family cemetery. ---- The Crawford Cemetery had/has a natural stone, hand-hewn wall around it's perimeter which looks to have been about 2 1/2 to 3 feet tall, but It has somewhat sunken and is now in disarray. And, in front of the cemetery, some 50 yards, there's a Rock out-cropping where one can still see the old saw marks where the indigenous stone was harvested from which to build this circa 1805 Crawford family cemetery wall. The wall was most certainly built by Samuel Crawford's slaves, of which he had an abundance (anything over 5-10 was considered a lot for Kentucky). According to records, at one time, Samuel Crawford Sr owned about 18 slaves. The Samuel Crawford main slave graveyard may possibly be located over the cliff, or at Samuel Crawford's second parcel of land (300? acres) located in the community of Rockvale at the boundary of Ohio and Breckenridge Counties, Kentucky. ----- A local historian says that she suspects that the Crawford Family was involved in helping to run the Tar Springs Resort which was only about a mile from the Crawford Family plantation. She points out that since the Crawford Family had around 18 slaves that she thinks that those slaves would've been somewhat involved in helping to run the Tar Springs Resort, Which was a 19th-century health resort about 4 miles south of Cloverport. ----- (Online is saying John Crawford Sr 1721-c1779, is the father of this Sam'l, but) Years ago, I saw a record that seemed to indicate that the parents of this Samuel Crawford are Samuel Crawford and Margaret Crawford, (so perhaps: Col John Samuel Crawford?? And thus indicating that perhaps Samuel's (1750-1821) parents may have been cousins?--if both his parents had the same last name of Crawford?) Another source cites William Crawford-died 1769 of Botetourt Co VA as being the father of this Tar Fork Samuel. Perhaps Margaret's maiden name was Daviess, which is apparently somehow an important family (sur)name, both at TarFork and back in Augusta County, VA, with Daviess having been used as a first name for at least one of Samuel's grandsons (Daviess Earl Crawford). And then used as a middle name back in Augusta County for an apparent cousin: Capt Samuel Davies Crawford 1786-1846. The Davies family(s) was in Augusta County VA, and other surrounding areas. Also, there were Davies living in Lancaster county Pennsylvania in the early 18th century, which is where many of the extended Augusta County Crawfords supposedly immigrated to, first, coming from Northern Ireland, so landing in Lancaster, PA, before they then migrated to Augusta County Virginia. (but there were early Crawford families too living in Tidewater Virginia in the middle 1600s which may be this Samuel's ancestry). See the memorial and history for Captain Samuel Davies Crawford, born 1786-died February 13, 1846, of Augusta county VA. And thus His middle name: Davies matches Samuel Crawford's grandson's first name Daviess, and most likely connects this Fort Defiance Crawford family to the Breckenridge county Crawford family of Tar Fork, Cloverport. So the Tar Fork Crawfords also used the name Davies as a first name (Daviess). I wonder if Samuel (1750-1821) Crawford's mother's maiden name is Davies. And thus it certainly seems probable that a lot of Samuel Crawford's extended Crawford family would be buried in the old Augusta Stone Presbyterian Church at Fort Defiance, in Augusta County VA. So It certainly appears that this Cloverport Samuel Crawford, 1750-1821, is SOMEHOW blood related to the most central progenitor immigrant: Colonel William Crawford 1691-1761, who, having immigrated from northern Ireland, coming first to Lancaster county Pennsylvania circa 1723, is the main or a main Crawford progenitor for those Augusta County and Virginia Crawfords, But perhaps being a great uncle or a great-great uncle to Samuel Crawford 1750-1821 of Tar fork, Cloverport, Breckenridge County. With the Davies (sur)name it seems reasonable that Col Wm Crawford 1691-1761 can be linked SOMEHOW to the Cloverport Crawfords. But It makes more sense that there is a blood relatedness through as extended family, because If Colonel William Crawford 1691-1761, was indeed the grandfather or great grandfather of this Cloverport Samuel Crawford 1750-1821, I think those records would have surfaced by now. It SEEMS to me that the Jamestown, VA or Norfolk VA Crawfords (of John and David Crawford, or then Wm & Naundine Valentine Crawford) would be the linage of this Tar Fork, KY Samuel Crawford 1750-1821. But this hypothesis would certainly need to be proven. It would likely help greatly if the middle names of all Samuel Crawford's children and grandchildren were known, and even Samuel's siblings middle names. One online blog claims that the book: The Descendants of Moses and Isabell (Clark) Crawford of Bucks County, PA, by Allen W Scholl, indeed tries to chronicle the (John and David Crawford-Jamestown VA) ancestry of Samuel Crawford 1750-1821 of Tarfork, Cloverport Kentucky, but falls short. One of Samuel Crawford's grandsons was named John Crawford Pate. Another grandson was named Samuel Crawford Pate and was the official who presided over Abraham Lincolns first trial as a young lawyer, in 1827, wereby Abraham Lincoln, the future president of United States, then defended himself, in the east room of Samuel Crawford Pate's home in Lewisport, KY. Samuel and brother James Crawford bought in March of 1770 land from descendants of the Randolph Family of Henrico county VA, which is where the David Crawford line was situated; so it seems likely that Samuel of Tar Fork is somehow connected into that Henrico County Crawford line. ~~~ These old records in my possession show that In 1801 Samuel CRAWFORD sells acreage back in Virginia to the Terry family, with the Terrys having married into the David Crawford descendants. Thus most likely he was selling land to his cousins, and Samuel CRAWFORD of Tar fork is likely descended from David Crawford 1625-1710, the progenitor. Samuel Crawford’s only known sibling is James CRAWFORD who bought land with Samuel in Virginia, and then lived next door to him in Botetourt County Virginia. ~~~ Samuel’s (1750-1721) father is likely William Crawford, who was a county constable in Virginia, he being born circa 1720. (This Samuel CRAWFORD of Tar Fork Kentucky perhaps seems to be a nephew of the John Crawford who has a will in Botetourt county in 1796. With this John also having sons named Samuel and James Crawford, which would seemingly be cousins to Samuel Crawford of Tar Fork Breckinridge County Kentucky. All this being very confusing in the VA records, but using DNA should help.

Their marriage per Botetourt Co. Marriage Bond dated 23 MAR 1771
with security John Mills Jr. Since husbands were usually older
than wives, I position his birth as ca.1745-1750 for she "of law
ful age" on the bond--thus at least 21 in 1771. I position her
birth specifically as spring 1750. She does not appear in the
Rev. John Craig's baptismal records (which ends in 1749);
however, her elder brother John was baptized 7 MAR 1749. There
fore she was born after MAR 1749 but by MAR 1750 to be "of legal
age" MAR of 1771. She was born in then Augusta Co. VA; Samuel's
birthplace is yet to be determined.
Samuel and his brother James first appear in the VA valley
records ca1770. Together they purchased 212 acres on Goose Creek
in what was then thought to be or was Bedford Co. 27 MAR 1770.
Apparently no one has systematically located all the land Samuel
acquired in VA; neither has anyone located all the references to
him in various records. The following may only be a sampling.

10 FEB 1789 Samuel Crawford (Roan Oak) was appointed Valuer
of Property. [This the first use of the designation "Roan Oak"
suggesting another Samuel Crawford (there are six on the 1787 tax
rolls) is beginning to appear in court records. [Mrs. Coulter
says there was an older Samuel who died 1790's whose probate
records are under "Andrew".]
"Our" Samuel is possibly the one appointed Processioner in
14 AUG 1795.

from Burton's Botetourt Co. VA: It's Men 1770-1777 "our"
Samuel Crawford appears on the tax list in 1772 and 1775 from
"Stone House at Cloverdale to South Roanoke River". Fothergill
& Naugh VA Taxpayers 1782-1787 shows one Samuel in Botetourt Co.
taxed with one poll (white male over 21) plus one slave and the
other Samuel with just one poll. Per Kegley's VA Frontiers the
1783 tax roll for Capt. Neely's Co. (all residents east of
Peter's Creek near the Great Lick) includes Samuel Crawford Sr.
who was taxed with 10 horses, 12 cattle and had no slaves. This
is probably "ours" for Jennet's brother Joseph Mason was in the
same tax district; he had 1 horse and 1 cow.
Yantis's 1787 VA Tax Payers from Botetourt Co. shows three Samuel
Crawfords as heads of households. One Samuel is taxed for 0
white males between 16 and 21; 2 Blacks above 16; 0 Blacks under
16; 7 horses and 12 cattle and another with 1 white male above
16; no Blacks; 10 horses and 23 cattle. "Our" Samuel is one of
those for the other "head of household" is taxed for only 4
horses. Three other Samuels appear on the rolls--two over 21 and
one between 16 and 21--who were all living in other CRAWFORD
households.
Per Robert Stoner A Seed-Bed of the Republic: Early Botetourt
"our" Samuel was registered for recruitment in the Revolutionary
War in the 15th District along with Jennet's brothers Joseph and
James. Another Samuel Crawford was registered in the 10th dis-
trict.
Kentucky
I suspect Samuel or his agent chose the land he desired in KY
during 1796 or as late as the summer of 1797. We learn from Old
Kentucky Surveys & Grants that he was granted 1000 acres in
(then) Hardin Co. on Rock Lick Creek 6 AUG 1798; this land was
surveyed for him 18 NOV 1797.
Samuel and Jennet purchased several additional tracts of land in
the areas that became Breckinridge and Ohio Counties; much of
this was given to their children. They resided in what became
Ohio Co. for he appears on the 1810 and 1820 Ohio Co. KY census
per Ohio County, Kentucky 1810-1840 Censuses transcribed by
Rowena Lawson. His household in 1810 consisted of one male 16
26 and Samuel and Jennet--both over 45. His 1820 household showed
just Samuel and his then wife Elizabeth plus 18 slaves.
This Samuel reportedly served as either a Commissioned Officer
from Breckinridge Co. in the War of 1812 or as a private in Capt.
Kincheloe's Co. of Mounted Volunteer Militia summer 1813; I
suspect the reporter is mistaking his son for him for this Samuel
would have been nearing 70 years of age and resided in Ohio Co.
at the time.
Jennet's name last appears on an Ohio Co. Deed 11 JUL 1810; she
died sometime between this date and 11 FEB 1818 when Samuel wrote
his will naming his then wife Mary Elizabeth (Blacklock). Samuel
died shortly before 12 NOV 1821 (date of probate) in Ohio Co. KY.
He had 18 slaves at the time of his death; he have already given
most of his children their portions, so left his second wife
Elizabeth the bulk of his estate including the plantation on
which he lived.
Children from will of Jennet's brother James Mason located in
Botetourt Co. VA Will Book B, p. 183; James identifies these as
his neices and nephews and children of Samuel and Jennet Craw-
ford. Jennet, his sister and best friend, received his mulatto
"Nelly". Samuel was named as one of his executors. [Children
are verified as heirs of Samuel in Ohio Co. KY Deed Book Q, page
134-37.]

FEB 1862. It also gives Joseph the rank of "Capt."]

Theodocia Earl Compton 16 FEB 1806.

VA d. 25 MAR 1865 in Ursa, Adams Co. Illinois. He married
first Mary Jane McCreery 10 FEB 1805 at Hartford, Ohio Co.
