Samuel Watson Akin was named for his maternal grandfather Col. James Samuel Watson ("Samuel Watson"). The Akins (also Eakin) lived near Clover, SC, in what is now York County. Samuel's mother's parents, one sister (Polly W. Eakin), and one half-brother (Joseph Howe) are buried at the Bethel Presbyterian Church cemetery in Clover.
Samuel's siblings included Robert Howe Akin, William Victor Akin, Martha L. Akin, Ellenor Akin, John Williamson Akin, Permelia Akin, Polly W. Eakin (Akin), and Eleanor Victoria Akin.
Samuel Watson Akin married Emily "Milia"Biffle 18 Feb 1813 in Maury County. Their children include: Nathan Biffle, Andrew J., Lewis S., Polly, Frances, Elizabeth, Winifred S., Caroline, and James Houston. Emily's paternal grandparents were Johannes Adam Biffle (from the German) and Catherine Henckle of Weaverville, Buncombe, NC.
