    Samuel Watson Akin was named for his maternal grandfather Col. James Samuel Watson ("Samuel Watson"). The Akins (also Eakin) lived near Clover, SC, in what is now York County. Samuel's mother's parents, one sister (Polly W. Eakin), and one half-brother (Joseph Howe) are buried at the Bethel Presbyterian Church cemetery in Clover.
