Have been unsuccessful thus far in tracing any further back than Robert W. Smalling, ca 1779. However, according to Steve Smalling, they must have come down to Piney Flats, TN from VA, through the 

Shenandoah Valley.  Steve has found 4 Smallings in the Shenandoah Valley as early as 1751., and for the next 50 yrs they migrated slowly down the path to what is now Interstate 81, until they ended
up in Sullivan County, TN.  Steve's father was born in Piney Flats in 1926, and is buried in Shell Cemetery in Piney Flats, alongside his father, gf, ggf, ggm.

children listed, no sources. Father was 9 years old?
