She was born in 1760 in Clover, York District, SC. Her parents were Col. Samuel Watson and Elizabeth McDowell who lived near (and were very active in) the Bethel Presbyterian Church. Both her parents are buried in the historic Bethel Presbyterian Cemetery along with several members of her family, including her young daughter Mary "Polly" W. Eakin who died before the Akins moved to Tennessee. Mary's son by first husband Robert Howe is buried there near his grandparents and his half-sister.

The church was there during the Revolution, and a British officer promised to burn the church when he got back from King's Mountain. He never came back.

Mary and John moved to Middle Tennessee probably because John would have had a land grant for service in the Revolution at King's Mountain, just north of Clover, SC.
