Mary Rust's origins are unknown. Her first sighting is on 30th March 1673, when she married John Bentman at Shillington in Bedfordshire. They had one daughter, Mary, who was baptised on 31st December 1674. However, Mary clearly died shortly after giving birth to young Mary: she was buried the day after young Mary was baptised. Young Mary did not live long after her mother's death either, being buried only eighteen days after her baptism.

John therefore lost his wife and only child within a few days of each other. He remarried four years later.
