Mary Gibbons was the oldest child of Thomas Gibbons Sr (III) and Anne Eppes, born in Albemarle Parish, Surry County, VA; her birth is listed in the parish register. She married William Fitzgerald (also spelled Fitzjarrel) about 1782 in Sullivan County, TN. They had moved to White County by 1812 when William received a land grant in the Doyle community.

Mary's brothers Thomas Gibbons, Jr. (IV), Edmond Gibbons, and Epps Gibbons were living nearby in Overton County, TN, each having migrated into that county at various times, Edmond Gibbons being the only one to remain in Overton County.

William Fitzgerald died about 1815, and assumed to be buried in the same cemetery.
