Mary's father, Capt. William Dobbs of New York, was a nautical pilot, and in earlier years, had been a West Indies trader and privateer. It is not known why he would have brought his wife to Curacao in 1771, but nonetheless, that is where Mary was born.

Mary married Charles Holt, the Republican newspaper editor/publisher, and they lived in Hudson, New York. After Mary's father died, Mary's mother lived with them until her death in 1804.
