Mary Dicks' origins are unknown. Her first sighting is on 14th May 1722, when she married a labourer named James Bentman at Shillington in Bedfordshire.

They had a daughter, Ann, baptised at Shillington in 1724, but she died when just over a year old in 1725. Later in 1725, they had a son named John, followed by a son named William in 1727.

Mary died in 1739, being buried at Shillington on 27th June 1739. James was therefore left with the two boys to look after, who were 13 and 12 when their mother died. James outlived Mary by nearly 17 years, being buried at Shillington on 2nd February 1756, aged 66.
