"The 601 acres of land which comprised the upper wapwallopen area was deeded by John R.Coates, agent for John and William Penn to Samuel Mifflin, June 23, 1802. Samuel Mifflin of Philadelphia, deeded the tract called Wapwallopen, to Martin Harter, June 24, 1802 9 Deed Book 9, page 163, Luzerne County. Martin Harter sold to James McNeal 312 acres, 41 perches of the northermost part of the tract on June 25, 1802. James McNeal in turn sold it to James Santee the same land,"excepting and allowing and reserving 18 perches in length, on the east side of the road from Thomas Kochers to Martin Harter's, deceased,in which are buried the bodies of Martin Harter and Sarah McNeal and others."
