Martha Spufford's origins have yet to be established. If the age quoted when she died is correct then she was born around 1799 or 1800.

Martha's first confirmed sighting is on 4th November 1819, when she was married at Houghton Regis in Bedfordshire to William Kempson, who was from the neighbouring parish of Totternhoe. Martha and James appear to have had two children; a daughter called Sarah in 1820, and a son called James in 1823, who were both baptised at Totternhoe.

In 1828 Martha and William witnessed the marriage of William's sister Ann at Totternhoe.

Martha died in 1838. She was buried at Totternhoe on 14th June 1838. She was said to be 38 years old. William survived her by nearly eighteen years, and remarried in 1852.
