Martha Beatrice Roscoe Saul was born on 15th February 1880 in the seaside village of Arnside in the parish of Beetham, Westmorland.[9] She was the daughter of a farmer named Robert Saul, who was also from Arnside, and his wife Ann Roscoe, originally from Cheshire. Martha's father Robert died in 1887, aged 51, when Martha was only 7. Her mother Ann subsequently took over the farm, as well as also apparently working in some capacity to do with the postal service.

In 1922, aged 42, Martha married a widower named Joseph Alexander Ralston. He was 25 years her senior, being about 67 when they married. He was originally from Birkenhead in Cheshire, but had spent many years living in Manchester where he had run a grocery business. Martha and Joseph do not appear to have had any children. They lived at Mayfield in the hamlet of Sandside in the parish of Beetham, and were married for 17 years before Joseph died on his 85th birthday.

Martha outlived Joseph by over 21 years and died in 1961, aged 81.
