From records of Tina N. Near: Identifying the parents of Marion Dallas Payne has been difficult. My grandmother did not leave any records and his death certificate left that part blank. The only clues I have are baby book notes from my grandmother Eula mentioning her Uncle Larkin Payne (born 1875). His father, Larkin Payne Sr (1835) was listed as Larkin Hood in the 1850 Cherokee, Georgia census. The father was Wiley Hood (1809). Then for 1860, 1870, and 1880, he was listed as Larkin Payne. I found the Larkin Payne family in the 1880 census for Little River, Milton, Georgia. The child born in 1873 (which should have been Marion Dallas, my great grandfather) was listed as Mary D., a girl. I could understand the recorder hearing the name Marion and think he was a she. Who knows. A Hood descendant shared their mother's book titled "Some Ancestors and Descendants of John Smith Hood and Georgia Wilcox". Her name was Maryann Cavender Hood. According to her research, the first 4 "Hood" children listed in the 1850 census (Larkin, Martha, Mary and George W.) were listed as Payne in a family Bible. I do not know if this was a second marriage or if the children were taken in because something happened to both Payne parents. This will probably be an unsolved mystery.
