Facts and Events
There is confusion between this Mrs. Margaret Spivey and another Mrs. Margaret Spivey in central Alabama born just four years later. Evidence points to the other Margaret, born 1845, as being Margaret Salter Spivey:
- A Margaret Salter is in the 1860 Census (Ancestry.com link), age 14, with her mother, Rebecca.
- An 1850 Census entry (page 1, page 2) is barely legible, but her parents, Lemuel and Rebecca Salter, are apparent, and she is apparently one of the younger children. Lemuel Salter died in 1857.
- Margaret Salter married Joseph Sp[r]ivey in 1867 (FamilySearch.org link).
- Margaret and J.S. Spivey are in the 1900 Census with her birth listed as 1845 (link).
- Josiah/Joseph and Margaret Spivey are buried in Spivey Cemetery in Coosa County, Alabama - in Find A Grave (link), her year of birth is 1845, but there is currently no photo to substantiate.
- Lemuel and Rebecca Salter are also buried in Coosa County, but there are no clear photos in Find A Grave (link).
This Mrs. Margaret Spivey, born 1841, has more connections to the Sanford family:
- The 1850 Census (link) has her as Louisa, age 8, daughter of Caswell Sanford.
- The 1860 Census (link) has her as Margaret Sanford, age 18.
- Later Censuses have a Margaret, wife of Samuel Spivey, with the same early 1840s birth including 1880 (link), age 38, and 1990 (link), aged 59 and born in 1841.
- Margaret Spivey, born 1841, is buried in Bullard Cemetery in Elmore County, Alabama (link), the same cemetery as Samuel Spivey, who has a similar stone (link), as well as her alleged parents, Caswell and Angeline Sanford (link).
The only remaining small doubt is that Samuel Spivey's gravestone lists 1830 as his birth year, while the relevant Censuses point more to 1836, but the gravestone is also missing the day of the month of birth, but not death, so it seems fair to assume the birth date was an approximation given by survivors.
