Lucy (McCormick) Zion is reputed to have been a relative of Cyrus McCormick, the inventor of the mechanical reaper, though this has not been conclusively established.
She is the matriarch of the Zion family of southwest Virginia, having untold thousands of descendants in that region and elsewhere. She and her husband, John Zion, Sr., reared eight children on the North Fork of the Holston River in Washington County, Virginia, and later moved to Lee County to settle on a large land tract now occupied by the town of Pennington Gap.
After her husband's death sometime in the 1840's, Lucy made her home with her son William Zion and his family at their farm on Cane Creek, just west of Pennington Gap near present-day Ben Hur, where she died in June of 1854 of "old age," according to the Lee County death register. She and John are believed to be buried in unmarked graves in the Zion Cemetery at Pennington Gap.
