Lucy Cox was born in 1859 in the parish of St Mellion, Cornwall. She was the second of six children of a gamekeeper named John Cox and his wife Sarah Fox. When Lucy was about nine the family left St Mellion and moved to the parish of St Ewe, where they lived at a hamlet called Pengrugla, adjoining the Heligan estate, which is presumably where her father worked.
In 1879, aged 20, Lucy married Daniel Burnett, a farmer originally from St Ewe. The 1881 census finds them living at Lanherne in the parish of St Eval, with a young son and a live-in servant. Lucy has yet to be fully researched after the 1881 census, although it appears that she died in 1940, aged 80.
