The last name here is Hammerstein, not Hauenstein, but in the 1878 Memphis directory Julius Hauenstein is listed as residing at 83 Second Street, making this almost certainly a mistaken reading of her name. Also in the death records for Shelby County there is a 38 year old woman with no first name but the last name of Hauenstein listed as having died of yellow fever. Again a detail here (aside from the lack of last name) is incorrect -- Laura would have been 28 not 38 in 1878 -- but given the circumstances, it's almost certain that this is her date of death.
