Notes

Joseph Caldwell was a planter of some means in Kent County, Delaware. He was a veteran of the French and Indian War and served in a special legislature of the Provincial Government of PA. He was elected to represent Kent county for 1758, 1759, and 1760.

Joseph inherited 465 acres from his father and acquired another 162 acres from his deceased father-in-law, Jabez Jenkins. He died in 1763 without a will, administration of his estate was given to his widow, Mary on 10 Mar 1763. His property was itemized and filed in Orphan's Court on 6 April 1763. Total appraisal was 972 pounds, 17 shillings, one pence. It included a 'pinch back' watch at 5 pounds, an 'old' clock at 7 pounds, Delft bowl and teaware, cart and oxen, and 12 negroes. Rev. John Miller of the Presbyterian Church officiated at the funeral. Joseph left considerable indebtedness, but there was enough cash so that his wife could settle his debts without selling off any of the property.
