Grocer and draper's shopman. 1872 - Baptism: John Wharton, son of John WOMACK, farmer, and Sophia, of North Lopham. Age recorded as 25 years. John was baptised as an adult with 3 of his siblings, a niece and 2 nephews. He was baptised by Rev Joseph HUGHES, Rector of Chellaston, Derbyshire, who was his brother-in-law. 1877 - Draper, living in North Lopham, when he married. 1881 - Living on the Green, North Lopham with wife, three daughters and one general servant. Grocer and master draper. 1888 - Shopkeeper, living in Thelnetham. (baptism) 1891-92 - Carpenter, living in Thelnetham. (baptisms) 1891 - Living in Water Lane, Thelnetham (Suffolk) with wife and seven children. Carpenter and grocer (employer). 1901 - Living at the Nags Head Inn, Market Place, East Harling with wife, five children, son-in-law and a boarder. Self-employed publican and wheelwright. 1905 - Listed as owning three tithe plots in North Lopham - 74, 73, 126. Grocer, North Lopham. (NRO: PD 120 35) 1912 - Living in Burnham Market when he died. Probate granted at Norwich on 19 June to Mary Anne WOMACK, widow. Lynn Advertiser 3 May 1912 page 8 col 5: Obituary. The death occurred at his residence, The Hoste Arms Hotel, on Tuesday of Mr. John Wharton Womack. He came to Burnham at Michaelmas 1910 and has been in ill-health for a considerable time. He was 63 years of age, and the second son of the late Mr. John Womack of North Lopham. Previous to coming to Burnham, Mr. Womack was licensee at East Harling. He leaves a widow and five daughters and two sons for whom much sympathy is felt. Lynn Advertiser 10 May 1912 page 8 col 6: Funeral. The remains of the late Mr. John Wharton Womack who died on the 30th ult, were laid to rest in the cemetery belonging to Burnham Westgate parish on Friday 3rd inst amidst every token of sympathy and regret. The service was conducted by the rector of St Mary's Westgate (Rev. T. S. Falkner DSO) and the chief mourners were the widow, the misses Ethel, Marion and Emma Womack (daughters), Royal and Harold (sons), Mr. and Mrs. Gaze (daughter and son-in-law), Mrs. William Womack (sister-in-law), Mr. Percy Womack (nephew), Mr. A. G. Kempton, Mr. H. Cook, Mr. R. Cook, Dr. Hamill and Mr. Ofield. Mr. W. Lane of Burham carried out the funeral arrangements. The coffin was of polished oak with brass furniture and brass shield bearing the inscription "John Wharton Womack, died April 30th, aged 63". Floral tributes were sent by his wife, Ellen and Fred, Olive and William, Ethel and Emmie, Harold and Royal, Eliza Womack, Emmie and George, Maime, Marion and Artie, Messrs. Bullard and Sons (Norwich), Mr. H. Cook, Mr. R. Cook, Mr. and Mrs. Ofield. |
