- Page 309 - Will of John Wilson, dated Mar. 23, 1816
- Wit: W. Dunwoodie, Thomas Kincaid, John Stephenson
- Probated February 1821 Court
- Exec: son William
- Instructions: no inventory and no appraisal
- "the slave Jean who is an idiot is to live with her mother while she lives and afterwards by my son"
- Beq: to beloved wife Sarah one-third of lands or profits thereof for life, also her bed and furniture, and "the room in the back shade and the other end of the shade where she now sleeps"; also slaves Phillis, Eve and Matilda for life.
- at her death these slaves go to son William for division between him and daughters Esther and Margaret.
- to wife half of stock of cattle except those of his son's which came from his grandfather, one-third of hogs and one-fourth of stock of horses.
- to son William the home plantation and a small lot of land on the Greenbrier River below John Slavin's; my still and vessels belonging to her, waggon and farm utensils and horses used on the farm; surveying instruments, three parts of my books and slaves David, Tom, Ann and infant James Madison; 2 beds and furniture, 2 tables, 6 chairs, large cupboard and half of kitchen furniture.
- to daughter Esther confirmation of furniture she has got, slaves Suck and Rose; small tract of land on the mountain in Greenbrier Co., near son William's land
- to granddaughter Sarah Sharlotte, one two-year old heifer and other furniture she has claimed, with her clothes, horse and saddle, and the share of cattle she claims with the consent of her mother. This is conditional on her marrying only with her mother's censent [sic] in writing; otherwise, the legacies are void adn go equally to William and Esther

John WILSON married Sarah ALEXANDER daughter of William ALEXANDER who was said to have been the first man to teach Latin in the Valley of Virginia and probably the first in America west of the Blue Ridge. ((Pg 18)) The children of John WILSON & Susan [Sarah?] ALEXANDER were John, William, Sarah-Charolette, Susan-Ester & Margaret. John died in New York unmarried. William married Sarah McCLUNG, d/o John McCLUNG, of Bath County. About this time John WILSON went into the Army. He became Col. of Cavalry and commanded a regiment during the Rev.
